All the kids wear UA. Nike is for old white men.
I feel that UA has regional strength on the East Coast, but I do not observe so many West Coast kids wearing it. That is a market where UA still has a lot of work to do, it is wide open for a new competitor to come in and undercut UA -- and trends move rapidly from west to east.
That's actually a benefit for UA. UA can still be a great growth story as there are lots of fresh markets for it. International is a huge push they are making, with sponsorships of Tottenham (an english football club), getting into soccer and other lines such as footwear, casual wear, etc. It'll never knock off Nike or Adidas, but it doesn't need to. There is room in the industry for a smaller player to thrive. Competing on price actually would be terrible for UA though. The margins it has been able to sustain are a big reason for its rapid rise in valuation.
PP you responded to here again. When I think UA, tight-fitting shirts for muscle-ly men is what immediately comes to mind. If UA is striving to compete for the affluent outdoorswo/men and weekend warriors, the trendsetting teens and twenty-somethings, and the Asian and Latin American markets -- they have to do something to broaden that image.
