File an appeal with the credit bureau. If you point out that you ham not used the card in x months, and therefore were not expecting a statement, perhaps they will expunge it.
Doesn't work that way. It's unfortunate that so many people are still operating off of erroneous myths when it comes to credit scores and reporting. They report accurate information. It hurts like hell when a derog hits, but if it's your fault there's only a few avenues of recourse and none are guaranteed.
It worked for me. I filed a dispute with the credit agency, which went back to the credit card company, which agreed to drop the "derog." This was about three months ago. Granted, it was clearly the credit card company's fault (and pretty egregious at that), but their customer service department had not authority to change the outcome. The call center people just apologized that they couldn't do anything more and gave me no recourse within the actual bank. I think someone with actual decision making power got to take a look at the record, and it got a different result.
OP here. This is what I'm hoping for. Someone to say, "Hey, this woman has been a loyal customer for 20 years without missing a payment ever [without missing a payment to ANY credit card ever], and maybe we can make a 1 time exception as a nice gesture". I just want it to be seen by someone besides this guy I talked with on the phone, who clearly was reading from a manual and had NO authority to grant an exception. If I don't get it, fair enough. But then I'll cancel my card, because it does seem very extreme for a one-time mess up.
