W-L is an excellent High School. It has more varied demographics--compare kids of same socioeconomic backgrounds at W-L and Yorktown and they are indistinguishable. Disclaimer- we chose W-L because we wanted our kids to go to a public school like we did---not all rich kids. Going to school with and making friends with truly polar backgrounds was a very positive experience for us. This is another we moved from DC and didn't go the private route over there.
The single family homes in the W-L or Yorktown school zones are incredibly expensive. Homes are selling for over 1 mill in previously blue collar Halls Hill and Bon Air, unthinkable 20 years ago. On the other end of the spectrum there are subsidized apartments for families with very low incomes. But there isn't much in between, which is unfortunate. The little red brick ramblers near Williamsburg MS used to be on the high end of affordable, but those tiny houses are nothing but teardowns these days. Going to a diverse school is a great experience for most kids, but it looks like the Arlington schools will continue to reflect the growing chasm between the rich and poor in this area. It's diversity, but with limitations. At least the rich kids in Arlington aren't pricks like in the Karate Kid.
