A number of years back a co-worker made overtures of friendship and invited me to go to my first Landmark meeting with her her (she'd been going for a while). Now I'm a person open to all kinds of self-improvement experiences but I just found this cultish and overbearing. At the end of the meeting they tried to pinch me for $400 bucks to become a member or whatever it was. I declined and two different people - the co-worker I hardly knew and a PERFECT STRANGER - offered to loan me the money, that's how full court their press was. Some of the things this co-worker told me about her first group retreat were horrifying (though she didn't think so). People yelling at you so you have your "disguises" stripped away, then after ages of this kind of verbal use and you breaking down, strangers hug you and tell you that they love you. Very odd to me. Also, this co-worker confided to me that she prided herself on the communication techniques that Landmark had taught her, it's why she felt that she was so effective in the office. What she didn't know was that many folks in the office thought her manipulative and phony. For instance, one time 2 days before Xmas break she came up to me with her ENORMOUS Rolodex - a lowly assistant at the time, not hers mind you, and said, "I'm desperate and I know YOU are the ONLY ONE with the ability to help me!" She wanted me to get all her biz and personal Xmas cards out in the next day and 1/2 and I guess she thought leading with "Only you can help me!" would cause me to puff up with pride and take on the task. Nope. Don't do it.
