The school year is too long now. A lot of kids still have weeks to go and we all know that school ends after the last end-of-year test, yet we adults carry on the facade that learning is still happening for almost a full month of word searches, movies meant forfor 4-year-olds not 10-year-olds (how insulting!), and funny hat days. I would rebel if I had to do this boring slog march to the end, too. I would know it's a waste of my time, even at age 10. I'd be unhappy, too.
This is why I'm pushing for our school district (Loudoun) to keep the school year as short as possible with as few holidays as possible ending as early after testing as possible. Then you have all the crazies on the other side claiming they want school to run year round.
+1. Year-round school is for the parents not the kids. It would result in student burn out, big time. Our youngest is a high school senior who does a fall activity. Practices started mid July last year, kid effectively went back to school in July after a month-long break. At this point, after AP exams, kid is coasting on fumes for another three weeks. One STEM AP teacher put Pixar's "Cars" on the day after the AP exam and now there are subs many days. How insulting for an 10 year old to be sentenced to watch a movie for four year olds. Yet, let's carry on the facade that we're still learning. Three weeks of this nonsense left to go...kid's done, I'm over it. The school year should have ended on Friday. At least college will run on a more common sense schedule. Looking forward to that!
Counter point- crime increases when kids aren’t in school, there is a clear summer slide for kids, not all of them are seniors and the law says kids have to be in school a certain number of days a year. Lobby your state legislature to change the requirement.
