5th grade has been the worst so far. Kids are mean and subjects are boring. All they talk about all day are you tube memes and gross things related to body parts. I’m telling my kid (who has As and 99 percentile in everything) to take all the sick days she needs for the rest of the year as long as she does not miss the state tests and field day ( if she wants to go). I am dreading middle school more than she is.

It would be a lot better if we could shorten school and track kids, and not tolerate behaviors. But sped parents would freak out and we’d have to find a solution to the daycare piece.

If shortening school leads to kids working or doing something meaningful (volunteering, etc) great! If it leads to kids sitting around on social media and brain rot videos, nope I’d rather they are bored at school.

They're immersing in the brainrot games and videos at school. For some, school introduced this. They're on gamified platforms for the "learning" part that may or may not be effective at teaching anything, and they're accessing games and inappropriate content in between all that. DC is failing kids, year-round school or not.

I would rebel if I had to do this boring slog march to the end, too. I would know it's a waste of my time, even at age 10. I'd be unhappy, too.

This is why I'm pushing for our school district (Loudoun) to keep the school year as short as possible with as few holidays as possible ending as early after testing as possible. Then you have all the crazies on the other side claiming they want school to run year round.

+1. Year-round school is for the parents not the kids. It would result in student burn out, big time. Our youngest is a high school senior who does a fall activity. Practices started mid July last year, kid effectively went back to school in July after a month-long break. At this point, after AP exams, kid is coasting on fumes for another three weeks. One STEM AP teacher put Pixar's "Cars" on the day after the AP exam and now there are subs many days. How insulting for an 10 year old to be sentenced to watch a movie for four year olds. Yet, let's carry on the facade that we're still learning. Three weeks of this nonsense left to go...kid's done, I'm over it. The school year should have ended on Friday. At least college will run on a more common sense schedule. Looking forward to that!

Counter point- crime increases when kids aren’t in school, there is a clear summer slide for kids, not all of them are seniors and the law says kids have to be in school a certain number of days a year. Lobby your state legislature to change the requirement.

Fine. The criminal and remedial kids can have extra school. Let everyone else go.

For an 18 year old, sorry. But also a 10 year old, quite frankly!

It seems to me that, while punching the bed is a safe way to deal with emotions, sustaining that level of frustration over time isn’t particularly healthy. If you felt this way going to work every day, you’d be looking to switch jobs after a few months. Keep the conversation with your child and his teachers going. Consider behavioral health support if it continues.
