The JLC role was so odd I thought she was only in Scarpetta's mind. Representing her inner monologue with a dead parent/sister. A plot device twist, like in The Sixth Sense, there would be a reveal with flashbacks showing she was not a real person.
I said the exact same thing to my husband in the first episode at the gravesite! It was just very odd/stilted - though I give JLC a lot of credit for her lack of vanity in her performance. She’s a jewel in Hollywood. But the character didn’t quite fit.
I've always had a soft spot in my heart for JLC but I think she must be anxious about acting because it was the worst case of overacting. This series was overwhelmed with bad overacting. The actor who played Benton stood out while the rest looked like bad local theater. The scene in the car where Benton and Scarpetta were arguing had such poor production quality it was clearly a faked car scene with a ridiculous huge moon that stayed in the back window the whole time. Someone explain why there were extreme meaningless closeups on their faces. I felt the same about one of the last scenes in the series where Benton and Scarpetta were having it out outside by a car and we had the rotating camera affect which was utterly weird and useless. This was a high school drama club production.
