I said the exact same thing to my husband in the first episode at the gravesite! It was just very odd/stilted - though I give JLC a lot of credit for her lack of vanity in her performance. She’s a jewel in Hollywood. But the character didn’t quite fit.

(I do find NK’s mask-like face distracting, though, especially compared to JLC who facial muscles actually move.)

She's the exec producer. So the "they" is NK.
The show's official line is that Patricia Cornwell "personally chose" NK to play Scarpetta.
NK has done a lot for women in the industry including working with tons of female directors, teaming up with other famous women, adapting/producing female-lead or driven projects (female authors and strong female characters). And NK puts her money/name/influence to these projects to get them made. That said, I don't disagree that she should take a seat every now and then. She does not need act in every project she's involved in.

This. JLC is playing the same character she played in the Bear. It was annoying.

They are married in the books. There were a few recent ones which parts of this episode is based on. Agree with the rest.
There are some other plot points and characters that have been changed. The casting is terrible. What a disappointment.
She and Marino are not married, preventively involved in the books. You’re thinking of Benton Wesley.
