I thought all parents tossed stuff in the basement as part of regular decluttering. Isn't that what is done to make way for new holiday/birthday presents.
My sister did this when her last child went away to college. It was cathartic for her and she got rid of a bunch of stuff. Unfortunately for the kids, she decided to give away their beloved Lego collection, including one creation that her son had hidden his cash savings inside. By the time they found out, it was too late. The kids still bring it up to this day, a decade later. So, parents, please ask your family members before tossing out their "junk." I find it hard to believe that OP did not know these books belonged to her DD.
