Trump actually secured the border during his first term and Biden really screwed up by reversing action. Now, the courts did play a role, but the numbers don’t lie: the border was wide open and people flooded in…and voters not only noticed, but felt it in communities across the country. I still can’t understand why Dems didn’t read the room and come up with a plan, or at the very least messaging. It’s like they decided to go all in to cater to a subset of voters without checking what they really wanted. And now we are dealing with a big overreaction by voters and ultimately Trump. FTR, I’m a Dem whose day job includes left-leaning advocacy (including immigration). Nobody should be surprised by any of this. Sure, the Admin’s efforts to destroy our democracy and the rule of law are shocking, but everything related to immigration could have been anticipated and handled better. Fast forward to today: the issues have escalated to a new level with the Somalian fraud and the Admin’s response. I think this will shift the conversation to assimilation and self-sufficiency. Voters are watching, and while they don’t like seeing hardworking people tossed out of the country, they absolutely aren’t interested in tolerating fraud (or crime). No clue why Dems can’t read the room and respond accordingly.
