This. What's wrong with the A/C? For 4 grand it sounds like your compressor blew up and contaminated the whole system or the evaporator is leaking and they need to pull the dash out to get to it.

Ouch. Yeah, replacing the compressor itself isn't all that difficult. The problem is if the compressor fails internally, it can send metal bits all throughout the system, so it'll kill a new compressor if you just swap it out and recharge the system. They end up needing to pull the components out, many of which are hard to get to, so they can adequately flush them out. It's the labor on that job that'll kill you.
If the compressor seized, either the compressor itself or the pulley that drives it, it'll lock up your serpentine belt and make the car undriveable.
