IME when parents of young children lament the lack of a village it's often because their immediate family doesn't help for whatever reasons. I personally wouldn't enjoy the type of culture that it involves overall but certainly would love some family reciprocity/ help. Both my and my husband's parents expect a lot from us and give almost nothing in return which is super draining (and frankly discouraging when we look around at the family "villages" some friends have) while our kids are very young.
It is shocking how many grandparents DO provide extensive childcare, carpooling, homecooked meals, help around the house (like handyman type stuff or even bigger stuff like painting, etc.) So if you don't have that (we didn't), it can feel like others have a much more manageable parenting load.
