This poster on X gets it: This shooting took place on perhaps the swankiest stretch of the swankiest road in all of DC. Most people who live in DC have never even heard of this street much less been there. This will change many blue minds. No one is safe. Anywhere. https://x.com/DCNewsLive/status/1958901623364682018/quotes
I live about two miles from here and have driven down that road to get to Battery Kimble Park. Like any gun violence, this is a terrible crime. I hope the victim recovers quickly and that the shooters are found and prosecuted, but the fact that someone got shot there doesn't make me personally feel more unsafe or likelier to support the federal government's intervention in D.C. It's clearer every day that the effect, if maybe not the point, of sending all these feds in is just harassment of our Latino and Black neighbors, many of whom are terrified even if they've never broken any laws. And the latest move to arm the National Guard troops stationed in the city isn't going to be an improvement. If Trump wants to reduce crime in D.C., he could start by reversing staff cuts at the U.S. Attorney's Office and by making clear that he understands that his political vendetta against officials who worked on prosecutions of the Jan. 6 cases has not made Washingtonians safer. He could also move more swiftly to fill vacancies on the D.C. Superior Court. I don't think installing new grass (?) in our parks, as he seems very excited to do, is going to make any difference in crime rates, and I definitely don't think pulling laborers out of their work trucks to detain them for immigration violations is.
