The Smooth Hawley Act didn't cause the Great Depression, it was passed in a horrifically bad attempt to make things better, and served to deepen the Great Depression. In fact that empirical evidence of economic theory about the inefficiency of tariffs is why the prevailing (and accurate) view until now was that low tariffs were good for trade and the economy.[/quote]
