What a waste of taxpayers money to go after this. I'm a scientist who publishes. This is likely another DEI probe- journals are often asking authors to address how they have handled items such as lack of racial diversity of their samples and other DEI considerations. These are instructions to authors that are publicly displayed on the websites. To what end though? Bullying, intimidation, silence? This is the letter that was sent by DOJ. https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/25900701-chest-doj-letter/
I think it's more related to COVID. Bhattacharya is a signatory on letters calling peer-reviewed papers in Science and elsewhere that support a natural origin for SARS-Cov-2 “potentially products of scientific misconduct—including fraud” and deserving of retraction—a stance the journals have rejected. He has also been highly critical of the COVID-19 views of Science Editor-in-Chief Holden Thorp. https://www.science.org/content/article/controversial-health-economist-trump-s-pick-head-nih "Bhattacharya was a lead author of a serology study released in April 2020 that suggested that as many as 80,000 residents of Santa Clara County, California, might have already been infected with SARS-CoV-w.[21] The study's design, conduct, statistical analysis, and conclusions were widely criticized as flawed.[22][23][24] JetBlue's former owner David Neeleman contributed $5,000 to Stanford University for the research, according to a whistleblower report; however, the researchers involved stated they had no knowledge of this funding" https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jay_Bhattacharya
