In my experience playing time is rarely awarded on just merit. My kid is a starter on her travel team, but the two kids who sit the bench most are NOT the two worst players. But the two worst players have major suck up/highly involved parents.
+100 That is our high school program I have a kid playing in college that ride the bench in HS (he did not in club- was a starter). He attended all HS practices, was not one of the trouble makers, and has always been very coachable. We don’t play those suck up, kiss @ss games in our house. So there was a lot of pain at times in youth sports—but eventually …and it can take until 18 years old+—merit/performance is what will matter and these kids without the suck up parents will have serious grit.
