Just like in the college process, your kid can be immensely talented with great grades and a big personality but that's really just table stakes. It's a bit of a crapshoot. I know this doesn't help now, but if you want your kid in private school, apply to 4-5, including some that are marginally less competitive. Putting your eggs in one basket is rarely a great strategy. Sorry to say that and I hope that the current school situation is at least tenable enough to get you to the next application cycle.
