I'm from Tallahassee and I have a very low opinion of FSU. UF is a much better school, and if you had to go anywhere in the state, it's there. FSU's acceptance rate is deceptive, it's one of two legit public universities in the state, and it's a huge state with a lot of kids applying. The other public universities (UCF, UNF, USF) are regional at best, essentially commuter schools or just about. In any case, FSU is a football school full of mediocre students. It has a few decent departments and of course there are bright kids who end up there for whatever reason. It's fine if you want to get a job in Jacksonville after graduating. I'm sure the frat parties are exciting. I wouldn't let my kid anywhere near it. I'd let go to Bama before I did.
UCF and USF are absolutely NOT commuter schools. UCF is one of the largest universities in the country (I think it's 2nd nationally) by enrollment. I grew up in FL and in the late 90's UF was always king and FSU was a far behind 2nd place for those who couldn't get into UF. I'm no longer in state and times have greatly changed, but it's not on par with UF. UF is the flagship and the harder admit.
I am in FL as well and yes, UCF and USF have changed so much. UCF is especially great for certain majors (hospitality management, close relationship with NASA). UF is a little odd in terms of admissions. They play games by rejecting a lot of kids who then get in after community college or do online first. This year they are trying to raise their profile with more OOS admits and deferrals.
