My parents are a bit like this too and justify their stupid parenting choices.  I just tell them we want to be better than them and reduce risk "well, you got lucky, didn't you". I also told them right up front 'no carseat means my kids will never ride with you'.  I also had to put my foot down with other safety things in their home.  And I never left my kids with them.  My brother does, but he knows how they are. The moment the door is closed they do whatever they want and feed them whatever and leave all the unguarded stairs and sharp objects for them to find.

Had I been in your shoes at the airport, I would have pulled out my phone and got a rental car, then told my parents 'we'll meet you at the house'.  They would get upset and I would tell them I am responsible for my child, not them, and that I thought I was very clear about the carsseat.  They will do this with other things OP.  They still view you as a kid and don't respect your needs.[/quote]
