The 5th spot was taken away in the spring as a result of the bay/fxb merger. 5 champions league spots for 12 clubs does not happen. Decision was made well in advance of virginia Union 2010 losing 0-10.[/quote]

That isn’t what was said. It was said ecnl was going to expand to 60 something teams for champions league. After Seattle, there was too much disparity goal differential wise, so ecnl retracted that and went back down to 48 towards the end of July. [/quote]
