The only instance I can think of where it’s hard to avoid socializing with family is maybe a situation where you are caring for an ill relative (eg your mom is in chemo and you need to help but her irritating sister is always there too).

It just seems to me that the real adult thing to do is to say “excuse me Aunt Larla, I have something I need to do in the other room.”

I also agree with PP that I ignore the bragging but if she says something mean you can just say something like “oh, I think she looks great in that.”  Or “I thought the meatloaf was great and it was so nice of her to make it” or something.  If she doesn’t get positive feedback for her sh-t talking, she won’t engage with you.  She’s looking for drama and you just gave her a full meal’s worth — she’ll be telling this story for years![/quote]
