I just don’t get these posts. You are an adult. So if you find an adult relative distasteful, you can just get up and walk away. Or not vacation with them in the first place.

The only instance I can think of where it’s hard to avoid socializing with family is maybe a situation where you are caring for an ill relative (eg your mom is in chemo and you need to help but her irritating sister is always there too).

It just seems to me that the real adult thing to do is to say “excuse me Aunt Larla, I have something I need to do in the other room.”

I also agree with PP that I ignore the bragging but if she says something mean you can just say something like “oh, I think she looks great in that.” Or “I thought the meatloaf was great and it was so nice of her to make it” or something. If she doesn’t get positive feedback for her sh-t talking, she won’t engage with you. She’s looking for drama and you just gave her a full meal’s worth — she’ll be telling this story for years!

True story. Sis, who likes to think she's a truth teller and is a bit of a loud mouth, said something along the same lines to our cousin. Fast forward three years and sis wasn't invited to cousin's kid's wedding rehearsal dinner and had to hang around the hotel lobby for someone to call the hosts to ask why her invitation got "lost."
