For my son, we bought a few things online, and kept the order info. Then, if he needed a few more of an item, or another color, it was easy to just have it sent to school. Better to show up with the basics and then top up on the items he actually uses. Some guys still are gaining a little weight/muscle at 18. If he has stabilized for growth, this make sit easier. If not, don't spend too much to start.

Since a winter coat is not needed immediately, I would wait and have him get a sense of what other kids find useful/comfortable for the climate/campus style. Then buy him a good one. For this item, I'd roll with the Chinese proverb: 'Buy the best. Then you will only cry once.'  Ditto a good casual winter boot.
