Interviews, church, shows, parties, regattas. Sometimes helps with upgrades on planes and underage drinking everywhere.

Regattas? Plane upgrades? Tell me you are privileged without sayng you are privileged. Why did you leave out polo matches?

And it is sad that you are trying to aid your kid in underage drinking. Guess you do not track the leading causes of death for college aged kids (and leading risk factors for rape). Oops.

Buy more warm tops in Boston if needed. New England is a better place to buy sweaters than the DMV.

Above is the outline of a refresh of my inbound freshman's wardrobe for college. His senior year wardrobe is almost worn out - not exaggerating. He will be walking a lot at college so hopefully won't gain weight and outgrow these things. This core wardrobe should be good for 2 years minimum for temperate and cold seasons.

Think advising on color of jeans and brand of clothes is a bit much?

Geez...read the OP...she said no snark. What value have you added today?

Can you provide link to the boots? We are not from a cold area and uncertain what boys were for winter boots.

PP. I can share the Sorel ones I picked out but they haven't been field tested yet. I read posts on boots for University of Michigan and shopped based on that. I picked ones that are waterproof but not for heavy snow because campus is usually plowed and shoveled. Bean boots/duck boots might be good to look at. Some people don't like how the rigid plastic shoe lower feels. I'm happy to try Sorel because Canadian brands usually do a good job with winter footwear.

I bought both the Sorel Ankeny 2 Boot and Sorel Ankeny 2 Hiker from Amazon (links too long to post). The reviews are mixed but I expect they will work.

Wolverine is a US workwear brand like Carhartt. When I read other people's recommendations, I thought I'd try these next if the Sorels didn't work out. Some might find this kind of boot clunky. I was interested in the Floorhand model.

https://www.wolverine.com/US/en/floorhand-waterproof-6-inch-work-boot/28274M.html?dwvar_28274M_color=W10643#cgid=work-boots&start=1

A final point of note, it might be more practical to get your son to buy boots in Boston if he needs to try them on. It is very important to have the right footwear for the use case. If he has easy access to shoe or department stores near campus (i.e. shoe buying does not become a time-sucking project) it might be better done on location.

Weather in the NE generally gets worse after Christmas. So, with some kind of light boots for fall, snow boot buying probably can be taken care of over break. Assuming your kid likes to shop.

Even if he does not put on fat, men keep growing wider through their early to mid-20s; if he didn’t gain weight in college, that would be a problem.

PP. Understood. I just wanted people to understand my recos are nearly an entire head to toe wardrobe. And we don't do this kind of massive buying every season. My son likes loose clothes. He should be fine. His new black suit was purchased for prom. He was borderline on the pant size so I bought an extra pair one waist size larger to protect the investment in the jacket. Took a long time shopping to find a good fit at a good price. Kenneth Cole Technicole from Macy's.

I don’t know any boys that wear jeans. I think it is more of a west coast thing. I would wait until he gets to school before buying any jeans! My DS doesn’t even own one pair of jeans and I have never seen his friends wear them either.

PP. That's my list. I live in Michigan. My kids wear jeans year round. They do not favor the slouchy sweatpants look. It's their choice. Most of their classmates do a lot of athleisure (especially sweats) but if you go to normal stores for teen boys like American Eagle and Old Navy there are huge quantities of jeans. It's not rare.

We are in DC and my son and his friends all wear khakis, not jeans. I do think it is regional.

PP. I used to live in MoCo. I can see khakis and colored twill being more versatile than jeans for DMV's warmer weather. Here those options are more for casual dressy outfits. Jeans are more washable and stain-resistant for sitting on grass, concrete, etc. Also a little more protective in cold rain. No idea how sweatpants fare in bad weather but they are popular everywhere.

DS has never worn jeans. His go-to dressy/casual pants are Lululemon "dress" pants. ABC something? Dress pants are khakis; full casual are Zara sweatpants.

Post 07/24/2024 19:09     Subject: Re:Clothes packing list for boy going to school in Boston?

Sock strategy:

Find a pair that he really likes. Comfort, toe seam, stretch, length/height, color. Then buy 14 or 21 identical pair. This solves so much when it comes to laundry, toe holes, dryer monster eating the odd sock. They all match each other and he can just toss them in a top drawer. He can have a few other pair for dress socks, etc... But a stash of matching whites and blacks makes life easy. As they get lost/ruined, the single sock now matches all the remaining ones.

For my son, we bought a few things online, and kept the order info. Then, if he needed a few more of an item, or another color, it was easy to just have it sent to school. Better to show up with the basics and then top up on the items he actually uses. Some guys still are gaining a little weight/muscle at 18. If he has stabilized for growth, this make sit easier. If not, don't spend too much to start.

Since a winter coat is not needed immediately, I would wait and have him get a sense of what other kids find useful/comfortable for the climate/campus style. Then buy him a good one. For this item, I'd roll with the Chinese proverb: 'Buy the best. Then you will only cry once.' Ditto a good casual winter boot.

Good luck!

+2 And this is exactly the sort of thing that first gen kids might not know about. Also, fraternity and sorority “date parties” often require a coat and tie.

Mine doesn’t wear jeans either, I responded already with the chinos and duck boots. He’s also planning to bring a navy sport coat and nicer pants and shirts for any interviews or events that may come up.
