Start teaching your kid life skills now before they go to college. I made my kids call offices, stores, etc.. to ask the question they wanted me to ask. I made them write emails to xyz asking for whatever they needed to know; I proof read it. They didn't want to do it, but I made them. Teach your kid to advocate for themself now. You are doing a disservice to them if you don't do this now.
💯 same
Can't agree more. On my own as a kid from a single mother addict home since age 17. Very quickly discerned there was no safety net for a poor kid. Having said this, the freedom I had was tremendously exciting and I had no one to please but me. I had less anxiety than kids with hovering parents. My kids were very well taken care of and went to great schools all paid for but were responsible as they did ask themselves what if I had to do it on my own?
