Video games are different from the 80s and 90s. They're very sophisticated with storylines and long cutscenes so that some of them are like watching a movie but one that you participate in. You get pretty good value, in terms of entertainment time, for the price, and there's nothing weird about it. It's literally another type of entertainment like watching Netflix or scrolling the internet. However, from what I have observed with my brother (never married, failure to launch) they have also been made very addictive in a way I would compare to junk food, meaning things have been added very deliberately to hook you beyond moderation. It used to be that guys like my brother were so good that they could "beat" the game the first weekend it came out, so they started adding "trophies," extra bonus content, special side missions, and other Easter eggs so players could obsess over "100% completion." Then the online component was added where you could not get 100% completion without downloading/purchasing additional material. Then multiplayer online was added and that's where it becomes super addictive because you have to be online to play with the group, often communicating on platforms like Discord. You're considered to be letting the group down if you're not online with them for various activities to get to a higher level in the game, and it's something that, AFAIK is open universe and there is no beating it, it just goes on forever. I might not have it all exactly right, but that's the gist.
