No one who is going. To Barnard should be saying they’re going to Columbia. But the schools are combined in many aspect. My DH who went to Columbia views them as one and the same and views his Barnard counterparts as classmates.
So Barnard students shouldn’t consider themselves part of the Columbia student body but Columbia students should consider Barnard students part of Columbia? Right. Gotcha. Crystal clear. FWIW, Barnard IS an official college of Columbia. It’s not some loose affiliation. This may offend the notions of some on here who think they know the exact pecking order of universities in this country, but it’s just a fact. https://catalog.barnard.edu/barnard-college/college/#:~:text=Barnard%20is%20both%20an%20independently,rich%2C%20value%2Denhancing%20partnership.
This is from Barnard's website, not from Columbia's.
And? Here are the facts. Barnard’s official title is “Barnard College, Columbia University” Barnard grads receive a Columbia degree. Columbia reviews Barnard faculty for tenure. Barnard is inside the Columbia quad. It was originally independent but the Columbia trustees were persuaded in the 1880s to make it the Columbia women’s college since Columbia College was all male. Admittedly the relationship is unique and not easily characterized in simple terms. But it’s not like Barnard is some parasite leeching off Columbia. None of the above would happen without Columbia’s knowledge and blessing that Barnard is part of Columbia. So back to my earlier point-why does it bother OP or anyone else for someone going to Barnard to say they are going to Barnard-Columbia or even just Columbia. Do you require GSA students to say they aren’t part of the “real” Columbia? Oh wait you probably would 🙄🙄🙄
