The saying is about investing and putting quality work into yourself instead of trying to hitch yourself to an existing winner for a ride
Small clubs are doing a lot for kids that most don't know about because they're not in the social media spotlight.

No academy team becomes the first team. Individual players on their merit move up. 
No college signs a team, they sign individual players.

Focus on your development and less about being seen.

That's fine when the kids are younger, but if you're interested in playing in college, it's easier to be seen if you're on MLS Next or ECNL. Not the only way to be seen, certainly, but it's the best way to be seen by a lot of coaches. [/quote]
