The control you want over your kids is crazy Short shorts are in, just like tube tops, mini skirts, daisy dukes, low ride pants, etc.. were in when we were their age.
+100 Seriously, "who wears short shorts? we wear short shorts." This is nothing new.
Just because it's not new doesn't mean we have to like it. And 10 years ago, even if there were people wearing short shorts, there were other options.. now it feels like there is nothing.
Because stores don't sell things that don't sell Parents that dictate clothing to their daughters are basically telling them, I think less of you based on appearance.
I think you are giving stores too much credit for logical thinking. The manufacturers create/predict trends and manufacture a ton of stuff on that prediction; stores prefer based on that far in advance of the season; consumers are mostly stick with what is in stores. So if they only have cold shoulder tops, you are basically stuck with it. The teen girl market is even less rational because adult women can at least say “well I’m just not buying new tops this spring” but growing girls can’t do that, plus the peer pressure is so strong they will buy what the stores are telling them other girls want, even if they don’t want it. It was such a pain when all we could find was ripped denim — my girls hated ripped denim but we ended up settling on stuff that was only a little bit ripped. My oldest also does not care for short shorts climbing up her butt and it has been a challenge to find stuff she’ll wear. Oddly, the choices for older teens are much better than that for younger teens—older teens aren’t such lemmings and will not buy something just because the stores have it in stock.
