I drew a harder line on tops (I don’t allow anything that shows stomach at all or is low cut etc at this age).

I don’t think there is a right answer (and I don’t judge other parents by what they allow- it is hard) but IME you do have to pick your battles with things like this.

What is wrong with short tops or shorts? Teen boys like that look, and that’s totally normal.

Are we raising a generation of puritans?

So? My DD is not a prostitute.

Short shorts are in, just like tube tops, mini skirts, daisy dukes, low ride pants, etc.. were in when we were their age.

+100 Seriously, "who wears short shorts? we wear short shorts." This is nothing new.

Just because it's not new doesn't mean we have to like it. And 10 years ago, even if there were people wearing short shorts, there were other options.. now it feels like there is nothing.

Because stores don't sell things that don't sell

Parents that dictate clothing to their daughters are basically telling them, I think less of you based on appearance.

I think you are giving stores too much credit for logical thinking. The manufacturers create/predict trends and manufacture a ton of stuff on that prediction; stores prefer based on that far in advance of the season; consumers are mostly stick with what is in stores. So if they only have cold shoulder tops, you are basically stuck with it. The teen girl market is even less rational because adult women can at least say “well I’m just not buying new tops this spring” but growing girls can’t do that, plus the peer pressure is so strong they will buy what the stores are telling them other girls want, even if they don’t want it.

It was such a pain when all we could find was ripped denim — my girls hated ripped denim but we ended up settling on stuff that was only a little bit ripped. My oldest also does not care for short shorts climbing up her butt and it has been a challenge to find stuff she’ll wear. Oddly, the choices for older teens are much better than that for younger teens—older teens aren’t such lemmings and will not buy something just because the stores have it in stock.

Google "paper bag shorts." That style can be cute and usually high waisted so a mild crop top doesn't show stomach unless stretching up.

My daughter likes to wear basketball shorts. Win win!

I buy my 11yo DD her shirt from the boys section. She’s been happy so far.

If you buy high waisted shorts the cropped tops would not show her stomach.

Yes that is exactly what she does 👍

My daughter wears shorts from the boys section but they aren’t fashion-forward.

Free People has longer shorts. Cat and Jack by Target has long denim shorts. My 15yo can fit into the sizes 14 and 16.

This, or buy off-trend clothes at Walmart. The internet is a wondrous thing.

Every teen store has boyfriend shorts, usually denim. They look cute with a small top to balance the look. I love Vuori athletic clothes, so soft. They have boyfriend joggers and shorts. My 12 yr old plays basketball so she has a ton of basketball shorts. With the right pair and right top it’s a look that is much cuter than tight shorts and tank top which has been the basic look forever.
