New land rovers are problem ridden but back in the day, they were easier to fix, very versatile and were used by the border patrols in difficult areas and even in winter conditions, United Nations peacekeepers, etc. DC has lots of snobs and politically correct folk, and Land Rover is the perfect car for folks who are loaded yet don't want to be like everyone else of such means and driving commonplace bimmers and benzes.
Back in the day as in 1965? I’ve been hearing about their problem issues at least since the late 1990s / early 2000s.
DP, but Yes, the 1950s and 1960s models were pretty reliable work vehicles, were easily repaired (because of pretty simple construction), and were good off pavement workhorses, although their ride was horrible (e.g., leaf springs for much of that period). At that time, it was not much of a “status” vehicle.
