Because your kid loves the core at Columbia but also the open curriculum at Brown? The rural isolation of Dartmouth and the vibe of Cambridge? The intellectualism of Yale and the preprofessional focus at Penn? SMH
Honestly yes. DS sees pros and cons with all of the schools he applied to. Each reach schools offers incredible strength and opportunities in the area in which DS wants to study and that is what is most important to him. If DS got into every single reach school, then things like location, core v. open curriculum, size, liberal arts vibe v. pre-professional vibe, etc. would come into play, but given that at best he may only hit the lottery at one of these places (if at all), it was worth the time and effort to apply broadly.
