Zoe is originally of Greek origin, and has been adopted in other languages. Some of those languages use umlats. English doesn't. In English we spell the Greek names Chloe, Phoebe, Calliope, Penelope, Daphne, Hermione without umlats. Why should Zoe be different?[/quote] We use diaeresis (they're not umlauts, they mean something different) in English for words where we need to indicate that a vowel is pronounced as a separate syllable. Naïve. Brontë. It's falling out of fashion, but it has been a very normal part of English.[/quote] The Bronte sisters' father added the diaeresis, it was not originally spelled that way.[/quote]
