Or the parents just flaked on rsvp-ing because they had a lot going on in life. You just never know what they were dealing with a year ago. Don’t punish the kid or your son for adult etiquette issues and it’s not worth the grudge. Presumably your son is friends w/ this kid if he’s been invited and it sounds like he really wants to go, so you should honor that if you can.
