While many of the self-defense scenarios discussed here are unrealistic, this post overstates the point.  A handgun would certainly give someone a better chance to survive than nothing in this sort of situation--which is extreme, of course--and while someone returning fire might have hit the wrong person, it might also have distracted the shooter and allowed others more time to escape.  It is really hard to judge.

A more commonplace scenario is the one presented here:
