While many of the self-defense scenarios discussed here are unrealistic, this post overstates the point. A handgun would certainly give someone a better chance to survive than nothing in this sort of situation--which is extreme, of course--and while someone returning fire might have hit the wrong person, it might also have distracted the shooter and allowed others more time to escape. It is really hard to judge.
A more commonplace scenario is the one presented here:

Banning private gun ownership and concealed carry would have forced the victims of this armed robbery to accept whatever violence the criminals chose to inflict on them. Whatever your views on the issue generally, it seems to be that this individual clearly had the right to defend himself, and that it is not a trivial thing to deprive people of the means of self-defense, because the police have neither the capability or the obligation to protect citizens in real time.

Would this person also happen to be carrying a gas mask. Yeah, I can imagine the person pulling out his/her weapon to return fire while trying to see and breathe through the tear gas.
I will never understand the insane troll logic of the gun lobby. This is NOT a situation where a handgun would have helped.
Yes, do you trust all cops, fire fighters, and military folks to be crack shots with level heads? I don't. Plus there are reports that the shooter was dressed in a way that it made it look like he was a member of the SWAT team and could have been mistaken for a cop. So, let's see, various individuals in civilian clothes shooting in a crowded movie theater in an effort to defend themselves from the crazy guy dressed like a cop. You're a SWAT team member and you show up - who do you shoot? Do you stop and ask first?Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:of COURSE it would. If I was there, with my concealed firearm and training, I would have likely found a way to get off a clean shot. Certainly I would not have dived under the seat and wait for my execution. I would not have shot anyone else in the crossfire - this is 25 feet and I am an expert marksman.
Do you think you are representative of the population that will pack heat in a movie theater?
lots of cops and firemen and ex-military in the movie theaters.

Uh...I can't stand attitudes like this. Please move back to your backwoods hometown ASAP. You probably have never even been in any of the neighborhoods you're talking bad about. Such a cowardly loser.

Or killed a bunch more in the crossfire of a dark and chaotic movie theater.
Don't be such an idiot.
