Long flights suck. Let people pass the time as they want. Wearing sunglasses during the departure day and at the airport will do nothing. Staying in light and keeping moving until 7pm on your arrival day is all you can do.
Agreed. You sound like a control freak. Your kids are teenagers, not toddlers!
Perhaps. But I'm willing to wear the title if it means we can enjoy the vacation during normal hours instead of from 3 am - 3 pm because everyone's jet lagged for the entire time. Why not try to alleviate it a bit? I think it's ok to tell your 12 and 14 year old what to do. The 19 year old - yeah I guess I can't MAKE him do what I say -- can't make anyone do what I say, really -- but hopefully they also want to enjoy the vacation and are willing to do their part.
Even if people are operating on a 3 am -3 pm schedule, it will only be for a few days and they are old enough to power through the fatigue. If they need to catch naps or be exhausted for dinner, it's ok.
Have you traveled with your family that involved jet-lag before? Our family has a day or two of exhaustion - we use those early few days to ease into our location. We do maintain a meal/sleep on location time as best as possible, but that does have to be nudged each day. Adapting to your time zone and location as well as your travelers is the key to our family enjoying trips together.
We each have to do what works. I wrote earlier that we do the exact opposite thing. Our first day is always packed, so that we are not tempted to sleep at the wrong time. Once we're on the right time schedule, we can ease off a bit, because no one wants to go to bed at 3:00 PM.
