I’m also a neighbor who lives on the block where this happened. It’s 3 blocks from Lincoln Park, still within the historic district. This was completely random and could have happened to anyone (myself included). DC must reevaluate how it’s handling crime, including juvenile crime. My understanding is that, under current policies, these kids get to go home with their parents/guardians while awaiting trial…
They need to find these 4 criminals, charge them as adults, and make sure they get hefty sentences. No more coddling teens. Yep - they made a "mistake" that cost a good man his life. Too late for "I'm sorry" or "I made a mistake." I have no doubt this isn't their first crime. Clearly, their parents have no control over them considering the hour they were out. Time for tough love - find them. Lock them up. Try them as adults. Give them long sentences. Enough.
The reason to try them as adults is to save the at-risk kids who aren't yet committing crimes, but may do if they see no consequences. Also to allow the kids who want to thrive through education to do so, by removing the worst kids from their neighborhood. We need to expand our ideas of racial equity to include the handling we'd want if it happened in our own neighborhoods. Minority communities need to get better protection of the law, as well as more equitable binding.
