A gift might be unethical. A lawyer friend once did us a big favor, but said he was uncomfortable with our (small!) gift, because he didn't want a quid pro quo situation. But express your gratitude in some way. My husband is a doctor, but from another country, and does not have a license to practice in the US, so it's even more irritating that I need to go through conventional channels when I have an MD/PhD sitting right next to me![/quote]
