Americans get so much protein. I do believe that protein fills you up more and is important for weight loss. But nobody needs to be trying to meet a certain target.
Generally yes but protein helps build muscle which becomes increasingly important as we age. I don’t want to be frail in retirement. I want to be athletic.
This is the answer regardless of your current fitness regime. Sarcopenia is a big issue. Most highly active people even in their 40s, 50s, and 60s have high protein requirements. Some don’t meet them. And they are sore all the time and their efforts aren’t met with the right range of protein for their needed nutrition profile. My wife and I are embarking on a mostly non-meat diet starting next week. I’m cool with that, but we will be eating a lot of vegetable based protein. I don’t mind those foods, so we will see how this goes. I’m training for a half-distance triathlon in the fall, so I’ll know within a few weeks if the non-meat deal is going to work for me or not.
