Is it illegal for a former American soldier to take pro Russian views on the Ukraine conflict?
It is illegal to work with official elements of a foreign government on national security matters while a USG employee or military service member. Conflict of interest? It would also need to be approved by Ethics, particularly as she was trying to get paid from her social media advocacy. It is also illegal for any American to provide material support to Russia, given the sanctions. She was fundraising money for the war!
Is it known if she worked with the Russian government though? If you survey the think-tank scene in DC, there are enough distinguished academics advocating not necessarily a pro-Russian point of view, but definitely pro-negotiation, anti-weapons aid, and anti-American hegemony.
Are those think-tank members active military?
They aren't, as far as I know. It's a philosophical question whether active members of the military are allowed to have political views that differ from mainstream America, and fundraise to that effect.
