Dollars to doughnuts that a major artery got nicked or, less likely, a lung punctured. If you hit a major artery, that blood is under pressure, and it takes just minutes to exsanguinate and die.

Yes, carjackings are swept under the rug. Killing isn't the hero's crime. Embarrassing the city is.
