DC spends more on schools than almost any place else — the schools are beautiful, teachers’ salaries are extremely high — and yet we’re at the bottom of the barrel in performance. Some of these schools are so bad you wonder if they should be closed.
The expense higher because DC provides free preschool and low class sizes. It's not going to beautiful school buildings and cushy teacher salaries.
Low class size? Where is that happening? And this is why DCPS is a dumpster fire. Parents come up with a ton of excuses for the low performance in order to justify their continued dumping of the kids into the system. No accountability. Who cares who says it out loud? The truth is that DCPS schools are disgusting - if not for rats, overstuffed classes, lack of support for teachers and students, it could be high school school kids stealing from local stores. The press loves to distract with a story about some random congressman - but the truth is - DCPS is a failure.
DCPS has lower class sizes than most of the suburban districts people flee to. And DCPS serves a very high needs population, which mean it has many Title 1 schools, and Title 1 schools cap classroom sizes, whereas non-Title 1 schools do not. So yes, DCPS has low class sizes relative to other districts. My child has never been in a classroom with more than 20 students. Also never been in a classroom with out a teacher's aid. How many suburban elementary schools is that true of?
