The attraction for locals and tourists alike is really the adjacent LA Farmers Market, not the Grove. Parking is sometimes easier in the adjacent Grove parking lot. But when there are spaces the outdoor LA Farmers Market lot is easier and free with validation. If the LA Farmers Market is still too touristy then try the Grand Central Market Downtown. It’s kind of like Union Market in DC but with more history and flavor.

+1. My teens loved staying near the Grove and La Farmers Market. It was also centrally located to go to la brea tarpits, the walk of fame, and other LA tourist sites. We stayed at the Farmers Daughter/Short Stories hotel right across from LA Farmers Market. It is a 3 star and rooms are small, but it is fine if you are just doing a short trip.[/quote]

Hi OP.  I'm the PP with a DD at UCLA who posted that West Hollywood is very hip with the young folks.  I posed this question to my DD, and she said for sure West Hollywood or Beverly Hills.

And for the record, I LOVE the LA Farmers Market!  DD likes shopping at the Grove because she LOVES Alo. [/quote]
