We have the three and only paid a few thousand for it because we traded in our Prius and got a bunch of the tax incentives. With what we save on gas and maintenance, it's definitely a cost saver. (Lots of places even have free electrical charging.) There are things I like about it -- it's very comfortable, drives well, is reliable, and I love never having to take it into the dealership (upgrades are done remotely, and if you need service, they come to you). There are things I don't like about it -- the whole flat screen control panel is, I think, really stupid. And I hate how they often change things around when they do the software upgrades. Our second car is a hybrid minivan. I'm glad that more manufacturers are getting into the electric business. But Tesla still has a major advantage in the tremendous chain of superchargers that he put all over America near the highways. It makes it so easy to travel in a Tesla -- the Tesla tells you where to stop and for how long to minimize your charge time. Because of that alone, I'm reluctant to move from Tesla to a different electric vehicle charger. They are hugely popular in California. I don't think they make as much sense in places like Maine, Montana, Nebraska, because electric batteries lose charge in very cold conditions.
I know a few people who work on environmental issues and they’re all po’d at Musk for making his chargers different from all the other companies’ chargers. This means that charging stations have to buy and maintain two different types of chargers. It’s a real waste.
That’s my post and I 100% agree with your friends. It’s like when the railroads first came out and it was all run by different companies that didn’t necessarily even use the same gauge track. It is a shame the government didn’t jump in earlier to figure this out. Teslas can use no Tesla chargers with an adaptor. They need to get an adaptor to let no. Teslas use the Tesla charger and figure out some incentive or threat to make musk allow that.
