OP, this is a little silly. [b]I didn't sign up for any such rules.[/b] DC is a very diverse city. There can be a cookie cutter style thing going on in certain contexts, but that is by no means the whole story. I commute in through NE DC and see certain styles, and then totally different ones in Bethesda.

But OP is right, the rules exist, even if some people have not "signed up" for them. If OP's business partners are looking at his wife funny, then this just proves she's subject to the rules, whether or not she's on board with them.  Just think of the sexy blond in The Help -- she did her own thing, and her DH loved her for it, but most of the other women isolated her. She was still affected by their rules....

And yeah, in some situations it's great to give the finger to other peoples' rules. But not if it's affecting his business relationships, unless he can afford it. Which is why I leave the low-cut cocktail miniskirt and heels in the closet when I head to the office myself!

So OP, maybe you can approach this with DW by telling her how fantastic she looks, she's the hottest in the room ... but I wonder if the CEO's wife doesn't feel a little insecure next to you, honey. We need the CEO's wife to be on our side, how should we approach this... blah, blah, blah.[/quote]
