We decide where we as adults want to go, but then look for some kid activities there. We’ve always found things for kids to do, and if it’s running around a piazza at night tossing a ball back and forth. Our kids have always been sightseeing with us and while they do complain sometimes, it’s never been a big deal.
This is basically our approach as well. Also, it's not like the adults always agree either. I like cities, DH prefers nature. We usually do a combination (city near a national park, for example). Finding kid-friendly activities - a pool, hikes, museums, zoos, a playground when DC was younger - is always good. But we generally like those activities as well. There have also been times when we've split up vacations. DC and I both wanted to go to Universal, for example, but DH didn't so he stayed home.
