According to the FCPS website, [b]it has to be the AP school that is closest to your home[/b] and that has available space.  It sounded like the poster above thought she could pick any AP school in the county, and that is not correct.  [/quote]

I am the PP (above) and I am looking for an AP high school with racial/socioeconomic diversity. We are zoned for an IB school and we want the AP program. [b]We have three AP schools that are close to our home.[/b] All three of them have available space (now) but we do not know what space will be like by the time our DC is heading to high school. (He starts 7th grade in the fall.) We also have a younger sibling (who will start 4th grade in the fall) to take into account.

I wanted to hear of others' opinions of the AP high schools because the 3 AP high school choices include one very diverse high school, one not-so-diverse high school, and one moderately diverse high school. We are trying to weigh options. The middle school that my DCs will attend is not our base middle school, and it feeds into the not-so-diverse high school.

Older DC has been with his friends at the not-our-base elementary school for four years. He will move on to middle school with many, but not all, of these friends. The high school decision is one where he can pupil place into an AP not-so-diverse high school where he will know some people from elementary and middle school (even though they were not his base schools) or start at one of the other more diverse AP high schools without knowing anyone.

You still don't get to pick which one you want. Plug your address into google maps and use the addresses of those schools to check the distance. The one with the shortest driving distance is the one you have the option to choose. 
You can only choose from your base IB school and the [u]closest[/u] AP school with space available. [/quote]
