PP, your original post sounds like you want to know which AP school in ALL of FCPS fits your criteria best. But, unless you are planning on moving, you have to go where FCPS tells you based on your address. It was my understanding that you can only pick from one AP school, but if, in fact, you can pick from three equadistant schools, that still limits your pool considerably. People are giving answers such as West Springfield or Falls Church, and those might not be anywhere near you, again, unless you are wiilling to move.

So, why not call your base school and ask them where students go if they wish to do the AP program. They might know off the top of their head based on your neighborhood. And if you can choose from 3 schools, then why not list them on here so people can give you their opinions of those three schools rather than waste time naming schools far away from where you live.

You can only choose from your base IB school and the closest AP school with space available.

The three schools have exactly the same distance from my home to the school. And, I plugged my address into Google Maps AND the FCPS Mapquest template.

So - do I still "don't get to pick the one that I want" when they are all equidistant?

I'm pretty sure you don't get to pick the AP school you want. If you don't want IB at your base school, then you have to attend a certain AP school.

We have three AP schools all close to our home so we can pick from any of those three. We have to provide our own transportation.

According to the FCPS website, it has to be the AP school that is closest to your home and that has available space. It sounded like the poster above thought she could pick any AP school in the county, and that is not correct.

I am the PP (above) and I am looking for an AP high school with racial/socioeconomic diversity. We are zoned for an IB school and we want the AP program. We have three AP schools that are close to our home. All three of them have available space (now) but we do not know what space will be like by the time our DC is heading to high school. (He starts 7th grade in the fall.) We also have a younger sibling (who will start 4th grade in the fall) to take into account.

I wanted to hear of others' opinions of the AP high schools because the 3 AP high school choices include one very diverse high school, one not-so-diverse high school, and one moderately diverse high school. We are trying to weigh options. The middle school that my DCs will attend is not our base middle school, and it feeds into the not-so-diverse high school.

Older DC has been with his friends at the not-our-base elementary school for four years. He will move on to middle school with many, but not all, of these friends. The high school decision is one where he can pupil place into an AP not-so-diverse high school where he will know some people from elementary and middle school (even though they were not his base schools) or start at one of the other more diverse AP high schools without knowing anyone.

We may also consider private high school as another option.

Anonymous wrote:Our babysitter went to Edison HS in Springfield. She had a very diverse group of friends. The racial diversity was striking but the socioeconomic diversity was more balanced. Seemed like a great school. Don't know about the numbers tho.

We're in this pyramid and are very, very happy with it. Our kids attend a racially/socioeconomically diverse school that has some low test scores but we feel they have excellent teachers and are receiving an excellent education. Our neighborhood kids/babysitters go to Twain MS and Edison HS and have gone on to some excellent colleges.

I would also look at the Robinson pyramid- nice mix there in terms of socioeconomic and racial diversity.

Little Run and Olde Creek are the more diverse elementary schools in the Frost/Woodson pyramid. This information is readily available, so it's not exactly a state secret.
