Everything changes when you're married, dear heart.
They own a home together, have been together for years, and the biggest thing is they have a child; they quite literally are bonded for life now because of their baby. No, a piece of paper won’t make things that different for them.
Unless OP and her BF have other legal documents in place, there are many things that wouldn't apply to them like they would if they were married. For example, OP can't handle medical decisions for her BF if he is not in a place to do so. That is just the tip of the iceberg.
+1 as someone who drug my feet on marrying because “it’s just a piece of paper,” all it took was him wrecking his motorcycle and me being at the mercy of his parents (who he had a horrible relationship with) to even let me know how surgery went to change my tune. We had looked into the legal docs we needed to create the effect of marriage and it was far easier to get married and have all that automatically than hope we didn’t miss something important (POA, transfers on death, beneficiary of a long forgotten 401k, etc).
